Question

A 21 kg box (m1) and a 35 kg box (m2) are connected by a lightweight cord as shown in the figure and are on a smooth (frictionless) surface. A horizontal force F of magnitude 56 N is applied to the right of box m2 as shown.

I found the acceleration of these boxes to be .98 m/s^2 and i found the tension in the rope to be 21N but i cannot figure out part c) which is the following:

If you now drag the same boxes across a surface where the kinetic coefficient of friction is 0.24, what would be the force you would need to apply to maintain the same acceleration as for part (a)?

I have tried this several ways and cant figure it out my previous incorrect answers were 75.6N and 57.232N.

Explanation / Answer

F-(m1+m2)g =(m1+m2)a

F =(m1+m2)(0.24*9.8 + 0.98) =186.592 N
