Question

Hello!

I m studying for one test from genetic, and stop at one subject called as Pedigree analysis...I was looking to find the best answers to make clear my mind but it is hard to me so hear is the problems:

-When they ask what type of condition is this: Is it DOMINANT or RECESSIVE how can I get answer on this....IS IT TRUE THAT THE BEST WAY IS TO LOOK DOES CONDITION PASS GENERATION FOR EXAMPLE THAT PARENTS ARE NOT AFFECTED BUT THEIR OFFSPRIGS ARE AFFECTED WE CAN SAY THAT CONDITION IS RECCESIVE, BUT IF CONDTION DO NOT PASS GENERATION WE CAN SAY THAT CONDITION IS DOMINANT FOR EXAMPLE IF ONE OF PARENTS IS AFFECTED AND HAVE AFFECTED OFFSPRINGS?

-When they ask is the condition: SEX-LINKED or AUTOSOMAL how can I get answer on this...IS IT TRUE THAT WE MUST SEE HOW MANY SEX IS AFFECTED....IF JUST ONE IS AFFECTED MOSTLY MALE WE CAN SAY THAT CONDITION IS SEX-LINKED BUT IF BOTH SEX FEMALE AND MALE ARE EFFECTED WE CAN SAY SIMPLY THAT CONDITION IS AUTOSOMAL.

Pls if anyone can tell me did i correct understand this pedigree analysis if not pls correct me....THANK YOU A LOT!

Explanation / Answer

If a gene is dominant it will be passed down to every generation. So if you look at the pedigree, if one of the parents has the condition and every child has it as well then it is dominant. For recessive, it wont be expressed in every child, so if one parent has it, and one child has it then it is more than likely recessive, or as you said the parent isn't affected but one child is the it is recessive. It is sex linked if say only men are affected by the disease so only the men in each generation have it, making it Y chromosomed linked. Or if a mother has the disease and only the boys get the disease and the girls are just carriers, then it would be X chromosomed linked.
