Question

Suppose someone tosses you an egg, and you catch it (an inelastic collision). If you catch an egg of mass M that is heading toward your hand at speed V.

What is the magnitude of the momentum change that the egg undergoes (assume the egg is at rest after you catch it)? Explain.

Does the total momentum change differ if you catch the egg more slowly, or is it the same? Explain.

Suppose the time you take to bring the egg to a stop is ?T. Would you rather catch the egg in such a way that ?T is small or large? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

initial momentum of egg = MV

final =0

change = 0-MV = -MV

the total momentum change still remains the same,it does not depend in what time the ball is brought to rest.

MV-Fdt = 0

MV = Ft

t=MV/F

so if i catch it in more time,then the reaction which I have to suffer by catching the ball will be reduced.
