Question 8 2 points Save Answer If you contract influenza from a stranger on the subway, what would be the first thing to make contact with the cells of your respiratory system? O cell surface proteins and membrane material from cells of that stranger's respiratory tissues viral capsid proteins. viral dlycoprotoin receptors. O cell surface membranes and proteins from your own respiratory tissues as the virus makes its way into your cells. O viral nucleic acids injected into your cells Question 8 of 10 Moving to the next question prevents changes to this answer.

Explanation / Answer

If we contract with influenza virus, the first thing the cells of respiratory system encounter is the viral glycoprotein receptor, i.e. Hemagglutinin (HA), a trimeric glycoprotein that is present in multiple copies in the membrane envelope of influenza virus. The receptor in the host cell for this glycoprotein is alpha sialic acid. The first step in the infection is rbinding of HA to its receptor inside the host cell followed by endocytosis of the viral particle. The viral particles enclosed in the endosome undergoes several structural changes, mainly in the structure of HA. This changes allows the viral genome to enter host nucleus and multiply its genome and replicate.
