Question
You are studying an organism Methylacquaticus coli, and have shown that it can transport and utilize gluconate as a carbon source. You conduct several experiments to try to determine what type of transport protein is responsible for gluconate uptake, and find that the compound CCCP, which disrupts the proton motive force, abolishes growth on gluconate. Which of the following transporter types might be involved in gluconate uptake?
I. TonB-dependent outer membrane protein
II. Phosphotransferase system protein
III. ABC Transporter
IV. Symporter
Explanation / Answer
i believe the correct answer to be the option 3 (i. e I and IV) since these are the only two that are capable of depending upon proton motive force to get transported through the membrane, i am not sure about the IV but confident about I.
