Question

The First part of the question says Calculate the absolute pressure at the bottom of a fresh-water lake at a depth of 24.2 m. Assume the density of the water is 1000 kg/m3 and the air above is at a pressure of 101300 Pa. I solved this and the answer is 339000.

The part I need help with says What force is exerted by the water on the window of an underwater vehicle at this depth if the window is circular and has a diameter of 35.9 cm? The answer is 34300. I am unsure how this answer was reached. I tried P*A=F 339000*(pi*.359^2) and got 137258.25 for F. I am looking for more for understanding than I am an answer. Any help is appreciated.

Explanation / Answer

you tried P*A = F everything is correct but A = pi*.359^2 /4 since diameter is given not radius. then you get correct answer
