Question
The following is for information purposes only:
A dart with mass of 0.200kg is pressed against the spring of a toy dart gun. The spring of the gun has a stiffness of k = 600N/m and it's mass is negligible. When the dart compresses the spring 7.00cm the dart is launched. When the spring reaches it's natural length, what speed will the dart acquire?
Answer: V = 3.83m/s
My issue is with the 2nd part of this problem:
Consider the dart gun in the previous problem. If the final speed turned out ot be 2.80 m/s instead of the speed predicted, what would explain the slower speed and what work would be done by this cause?
Answer: The slower speed is due to friction.
My Question: How do I find the work being done by the friction?
Explanation / Answer
here as the speed is decreased there is a loss in Kinetic energy.and that loss can be due to nothing else but friction work by friction= change in KE= 0.5m(u^2-v^2)= 0.5*0.2*(3.83^2 - 2.8^2)= 0.683 J
