Question

A 65.0kg ice skater traveling at 6.00m/s runs head-on into an 85.0kg skater traveling straight foward at 4.5m/s. At what speed and in what direction do the ice skaters travel if they move together after the collision? The answer given in class was 0.5m/s.

This is what i did: m1v1+m2v2=MTV, becuase i classified it as an inelastic collision

MT= total mass: m1+m2 or 85+65= 150, so MT=150

V= final velocity

i manipulated the equation to read: m1v1+m2v2/MT=V, then i plugged in the information..

(65.0)(6.00)+(85.0)(4.5)/(150)=V

V=5.15

**I need an explanation of how to solve this problem so i can see where i went wrong.

Explanation / Answer
They're going in opposite directions so its 65(6) - 85(4.5)= MTV .05m/s in the direction the 65 kg skater was going
