1. ____________ believed mutations are sufficient to account for the origin of species and natural selection was superfluous.

2. ____________ independently proposed the theory of natural selection as the explanation of the transformation of species in different geographic areas

3. ____________, together with others, developed genetic drift as an mechanism of evolution.

4. ____________ proposed most molecular changes at DNA and protein sequence levels are neutral

5. ____________ thought males within the same species often compete for mates, an idea later called sexual selection.

6. _____________ had a proto-idea of natural selection long before Charles Darwin.

7. _____________ challenged the Modern Synthesis , arguing not all traits have evolved as adaptations and the evolutionary change may not always be gradual.

8. _____________ designed a hierarchical system for biological classification and bionomial nomenclature system for naming species.

9. _____________ proposed new animal species form through geographic isolation, an idea consistent with natural selection.

10. _____________ believed evolution occurs through environmentally caused direct changes in organismal development.

Explanation / Answer

Thomas Hunt Morgan - Hugo de vries proposed that mutations are sufficient to account for the origin of species, to which Thomas Hunt Morgan supported and opposed natural selection. Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire also proposed something similar, but did not mention mutation, instead said sudden transformation were responsible for origin of new species. Alfred Wallace - Alfred Russel Wallace is sometimes called as the father of biogeography. He independently conceived the theory of natural selection and jointly published a paper with Charles Darwin. Sewall Wright - Genetic drift is also sometimes called as Sewall Wright effect. He was the chief developer of the theory of genetic drift. Motoo Kimura - He proposed the Neutral theory of molecular evolution, which suggests that most variation between species occur due to genetic drift of the mutant alleles that are neutral, not by natural selection.
