Question
Solute-Load: A person sits down in front of the TV and eats a large bag of salty chips. What would you conclude is the overall effect on your total body water and your intracellular fluid volume of your body fluids asa result of a solute-load situation like this? Total body water- The volume of the Intracellular Fluid 2) 'A person drinks a large volume of hypertonic fluids such as pop, sugary drinks, or Gatorade What would you conclude is the overall effect on extracellular fluid volume, and the overall osmolarity of your body fluids as a result of drinking a large volume of hypertonic fluids like this? (4 marks) The volume of the Extracellular FluidC The overall osmolarity-Explanation / Answer
2) Drinking large volumes of Hypertonic solution ( solution in which the number solutes or ions is far greater than that of the cell) can change the extracellular fluid volume and overall osmolarity of the body fluids. Extracellular Fluid Volume or ECFV refers to all body fluids outside the cell while osmolarity is a measure of solute concentration which can be defined as number of osmoles of solute per litre of the solution.
Consumption of hypertonic solution increases plasma osmolarity. It causes an osmotic movement of water from the cellular space to extracellular space (ie; intracellular water moves to extracellular compartment). This consequently increases the Extracellular fluid volume ( ECFV) while causing a reduction in Intra Cellular Fluid Volume (ICFV).
