Read: 3. The following data were collected during a study of the solute concentrations on osmosis in a potato core Table 1: Recorded Mass(grams) over a period of 60 minutes. ,12 -4 60minutes 0 minutes 6.2 6.5 6.3 60 minutes 6.7 0% KCI 20 minutes 6.3 6.6 6.1 40 minutes 6.5 6.6 5.8 16.8 496 KCI 5.6 Use the data in Table 1 and the formula for percent change in mass to complete Table 2 a. below. The first two calculations have been done for you as examples Table 2: Cumulative Percent Change in Mass 40 minutes 60 minutes 20 minutes 1.6 0 minutes 1% KCI 4% KCI Mass (current time point)- Mass (time point zero) X 100 Cumulative % change Mass (time point zero 6.3-62 x100-16g x100-1.6g 6.2-6.2 6.2 x100-og For 096 KCI at 20 minutes: 6.2 For 0% KCl at 0 minutes: For 0% KCl at 60 minutes: For 0% KCI at 40 minutes: Complete the calculations for 196 and 4% KCL

Explanation / Answer

Hi,
We need to fill the table with the data, as per mentioned in the question. The formula is given and we just have to calculate the values. The given values are the weights of potatoes dipped in KCl solution of different concentrations. The KCl acts as osmolyte and changes the osmolarity in the potato. The 0% KCl is like hypotonic solution, where the water will move into the potato increasing its mass. In the case of 4% KCl, due to this high salt concentration, the water from potatoes start to move out or the potato looses water and weight.

Below is the complete data table with values as per formula.

0 min 20 min 40 min 60 min 0% 0 1.6 0.8 8 1% 0 1.5 1.6 4.8 4% 0 -3 -8 -11.3
