Question

To get an idea how important ATP is to organisms, do the following exercise: The average human (you will have to figure out what that is) produces her/his weight in ATP per 24-hour day, but at any one time, the human body has only a reserve of about 250g of ATP. Obviously, a lot of ATP is being used up all the time, and it has to be replaced. Calculate roughly how many ATP molecules the average human cell produces per second. To determine what the average cell is, you will have to discover the number of cells in the average human body, and how much the average human weighs. (It is obvious that some cells are more active than others, but for the sake of this exercise, assume all cells are equally active.) You will also have to discover the molecular mass of an ATP molecule. Your answer showing your calculations, must be

.

According to the research done to calculate the no. of cells in an average human body at Department of Experimental, Diagnostic and Specialty Medicine, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy. They considered average human as 30 years old weighing 70kg, height of 1.72 m tall and with a body area of 1.85 m2. And concluded that “A current estimation of human total cell number calculated for a variety of organs and cell types is presented. These partial data correspond to a total number of 3.72×1013”

You roughly consume your own body weight in ATP every day, obviously influenced by your level of activity.

If we assume 70 kilos, that makes 70kg of ATP.

The molecular mass of ATP is 507.18 g/mol,

70,000g/507.18g/mol =138.01 mol./day

One mole = 6*1023 molecules

138*6*1023= 8.28*1025molecules/day

Per second that would be 8.28*1025/24*3600=57.5*1020 molecules per second/avg human body

Per cell = we have 3.72*1013 cell = 57.5*1020/3.27*1013=154569892

Approximately 154 million ATPs are produced per cell per second.
