Question

Of the three types of bees that you see in the image above the queen and the worker are genetic clones. They share all the same genes yet they look different from each other. The queen lives longer, they are bigger and they lay eggs while the worker has a completely different existence. If they have the same genes, what might account for the differences that we see in their respective biology? . For this week's task read the short article. Epigenetiçe and view video Nova: Epigenetics. Also, make sure you know the basic definition of what a gene is. As you create your assignment you will need to include all of the following information on your assignment. 1 Define what the epigenome is and its role in gene expression. In your own words tell me how the epigenome is involved in activating or deactivating genes. 2 Explain how altering the epigenome can produce a different type of bee. How do we transform identical bee larvae into workers or bees? Tips for success: Please keep your answer to only what is asked in the assignment- Remember, do not paste your matrix in the post I recommend composing your content offline in a text editor and then copy and paste the text into your reply post if something happens you will have an offline copy of all of your hard work! I highly recommend using Google Docs (Drive) to compose offine, as Google plays well with web-based forums.iIf you are using Microsoft Word to compose offine you may need to do some editing to the format when you paste it into the reply

Explanation / Answer

Epigenome is known to be consisting of records of the changes that occur chemically in the histone proteins as well as the DNA of an organism. These chemical changes are passed down to the offspring through the epigenetic inheritance that are transgenerational. When there would occur changes in the epigenome, there would be changes in the chromatin structure as well as in the functions of the genome. Epigenome is involved in activation or deactivation of genes by either suppression of the transposing or the transposable elements. Epigenome is also altered by the environmental changes, by regulation of gene expressions and tissue differentiations. The difference in the worker female bee and the queen bee is as a result of the difference in the intake of Royal jelly. There might be DNA methylation in accordance with this intake, results in these changes. The methylation patterns of both queen and worker bees differ by almost 550 genes. The worker bees don’t reproduce and this differences are due to the diet that is provided in the larval form. This diet, changes the methylation patterns. As a result, there is difference in deployment of the same genome. In both of these epigenome, it is the methylation patterns that control gene expressions.
