Question

**Assume the switch had been closed for a long time. Use Kirchhoff's rules to determine the voltage drop across R2.

**At the instant just after the switch was opened, what is the current though the solenoid

**At the instant just after the switch was opened, what is the current though R2?

**At the instant just after the switch was opened, what the current though R1?

**At the instant just after the switch was opened, what the magnitude of the voltage drop across R1?

**Suppose R1 were replaced with a 5 M resistor and the switch had been closed for a long time. What would the magnitude of the voltage drop across R1 be just after the instant in which the switch was opened?

*5V

*.5A

*.5A
*.5A

*2.5 V
*5V

(what I thought...)

Explanation / Answer

first one voltage across resistor is 5v
second one, third ,fourth are 1A,because inducotre will not allow a sudden change in current
current is 1A so voltage drop across r2 is 5V
even in the second case curren will be 1A
so voltage drop across 1Mohm will be = 1 * 1M = 10^6V
