Question
Retype: Three uniform solid cylinders, each with radius R and mass M, are spinning, about their individual with angular velocity, w1, two in a counterclockwise direction and one in a clockwise direction. they are bought together so that they rub against each other (with some friction) and eventually they have stuck together such that their centers are in a straight line. They end up rotating about the center of the middle cylinder (because that is where the center of mass is) with an angular velocity w2.
I don't understand this question. The answer is that the middle is going counterclockwise, but I'm not sure how to understand this problem. (please don't give me an answer like "because there are two going counterclockwise", explain in a way so I can conceptually understand the problem.)
Explanation / Answer
let the moment of inertia of them be I then angular momentum = IW in first case angular momentum taking positive anti clock wise =>Iw + Iw - Iw = Iw final angular momentum let final moment of inertia be k then Iw = kw' where w' is final angular velocity so it is anti clock wise based on our assumption anti clock wise positive
