Question
Here are the positions at three different times for a bee in flight (a bee's top speed is about 7 m/s).time: 4.8 s 5.3 s 5.8 s
position: < -3.4, 10.0, 0 > m < -0.7, 6.2, 0 > m < 1.7, 1.0, 0 > m
(a) Between 4.8 s and 5.3 s, what was the bee's average velocity?
(b) Between 4.8 s and 5.8 s, what was the bee's average velocity?
(c) Of the two average velocities you calculated, which is the best estimate of the bee's instantaneous velocity at time 4.8 s?
(d) Using the best information available, what was the displacement of the bee during the time interval from 4.8 s to 4.85 s?
Explanation / Answer
For part d I guess they want you to estimate thatthe bee went directly from the first point to the second point.When it did, it took 0.5 second (3.5 minus3.0) So first find the displacement between those two points: x direction -1.1 - -3.8 = 2.7 y direction 6.7 - 7.9 = -1.2 Then multiply these by the proportion of the time, i.e. 0.03 / 0.50 x direction 2.7 *0.03 / 0.50 = 0.162 y direction -1.2 * 0.03 / 0.50 = -0.072 Then add these to the starting point and final x position -3.8 + 0.162 = -3.64 final y position 7.9 - 0.072 = 7.83 so the answer to part d shouldbe -3.64 , 7.83 wrong wrong! This is the FINAL POSITION, butthey asked for the DISPLACEMENT So for part D, the displacement wasjust 0.162 , -0.072
