Question
What happens when light encounters an opaque barrier with a narrow slit opening? What is diffraction? Light has a nature. Circle the appropriate answer. For a single silt experiment, measurements are made from a diffraction pattern between the slit and the pattern and between the central peak and each subsequent (bright, dark) band. These measurements along with the order and wavelength can be used to determine the (width, spacing) of the slit. Circle the appropriate answer. For a double slit, distance measurements are made from an interference pattern between the slit and the pattern and between the central peak and each subsequent (bright, dark) band. These measurements along with the order and wavelength can be used to determine the (width, spacing) of the slit.Explanation / Answer
Solution:
(1) Solution:
When light falls on opaque barrier having a narrow slit,
If the wavelength is of the order to width of the slit, the light rays will bend at the edges of the slit.
Depends on path difference between the secondary wavelets, constructive or distructive interference occurs.
Because of this, we can have nice bright and dark bands on the screen.
This situation involves both diffraction and interference phenomenon.
(2) Solution:
Diffraction: When a light ray falls on an obstacle whose thickness is of the order of incident wavelength, light ray will bend at the edges of that obstacle and enters into the geometrical shadow of the obstacle. This phenomena is called as Diffraction.
(3) Solution:
Light has dual nature.
That means, it has both wave and particle nature.
Some phenomenon like photoelectric effect, compton effect were explained using particle nature of light.
On the other hand, Interference, diffraction, refraction etc are explained by taking the wave nature of the ligth.
(4) Solution:
First circled word is "Bright"
Second circled word is "Width"
(5) Solution:
First circled word is "Bright"
Second circled word is "Spacing"
