Question
When liquids freeze the density changes, which means that the volume changes as well. Water is one of the few liquids that expand when frozen. That is why it is a bad idea to put water in the freezer in a sealed container. Pete decides to test this idea. He sticks an unopened soft drink can in the freezer. Given: In liquid form the soft drink has a density of 1.11 times 10^3 kg/m^3, more dense than water because there is sugar dissolved in it. The soft drink in the can has a mass-of 400.11 g. An ice cube made of the same kind of soft drink has a volume of 13.4 cm^3 and a mass of 13.8 g. Find: What is the volume of the liquid soft drink? What is the density of the soft drink frozen into a cube? What is the volume of the soft drink after it has frozen?Explanation / Answer
Here ,
part a) density , p = 1.11 *10^3 Kg/m^3
a) volume of softdrink = mass/density
volume of softdrink = 0.40/(1.11 *10^3)
volume of softdrink = 3.604 *10^-4 m^3
b) density of cube = mass/volume
density of cube = 13.8 *10^-3/(13.4 *10^-6)
density of cube = 1029.5 Kg/m^3
c)
volume of frozen cold drink = 0.40/(1029.5)
volume of frozen cold drink =3.89 *10^-4 m^3
