Question

UU)US13Bok the experttaucom/CommonwiewAssignmentDetails.aspx Problem 5: A student drove to the university from her home and noted that the odometer reading of her car increased by 13 The trip took 23.8 min. Part (a) What was her average speed in km/h? Numeric A numeric value is expected and not an expression. Save o the university is 78 km in a direction 25° south of east, what was the magnitude average velocity in kilometers per hour? Numeric A numeric value is expected and not an expression. Part (c) If she returned home by the same path 8 h left, what was her average speed for the entire trip. in kilometers per hour? Numeric A numeric value is expected and not an expression Save, tot Problem 6: A skydiver decends di 310 meters in 11 21 s before letting out

Explanation / Answer

(a) average speed = total distance traveled / time taken

so average speed = (13 km / 23.8 )*60 = 32.77 km/h

answer is :- 33 km / h

(b) average velocity = resultant displacement / time taken

so average velocity = (7.8 km / 23.8 )*60 = 19.66 km/h E 25.0° S [assuming 25.0° SE is actually E 25.0° S]

for the average velocity you have to include the direction b/c velocity is a vector so has both magnitude and direction ... don't need the direction for the speed case b/c speed is just a scalar (no direction)

answer is :- 20 km/h

(c) average speed for whole trip = 26 km / 7.8 h = 3.34 km/h

and average velocity for whole trip = 0 km / 7.5h = 0 km/h ... [when she gets home she's back where she started from so she hasn't actually changed her position and her resultant displacement is zero]

answer is :- 0 km/h
