Question

Many molecular systems can be modeled as (approximate) electrical dipoles. The diagram below shows a dipole centered at the origin and along the x-axis. Point A is located at (r = 2.4L,0). (Note: The figure is not to scale!)

Given the above, for each statement below, if the statement is true, answer `T', if it is false, answer `F', and if the answer cannot be determined from the information provided, answer `C'. For example if `A' and `E' are true and there is not enough information to answer `C' and the rest are false, then answer `TFCFTF'.
Note: the symbols N, S, E, and W refer to compass directions. E, for example would be to the right on your page

A) The magnitude of the net electric field at point A is greater than the magnitude of the net electric field at the origin.
B) The direction of the net electric field at the point (-r,0) is E
C) The direction of the net electric field at a point on the negative y-axis is W
D) The direction of the net electric field at a point on the positive y-axis is NW
E) The direction of the net electric field at A is W
F) The direction of the net electric field at the origin is W

(-L,0) (L,0) (r,0)

Explanation / Answer

A) net eletcric field at origin = 2kq/L^2

net electric field at A = kq / (1.4L)^2 - kq (3.4L)^2 = = 0.4236 kq/L^2

EF at origin > EF at A

so the statement is false

B) the magbitude of EF at point ( -r,0) will be higher hence the net electric field will be towards east

thus the statement is true

C) This statement is true.

the vertical components of the EF will cancel out. and the net EF will be in West direction

D) This statement is false

the vertical components of the EF will cancel out. and the net EF will be in West direction

E ) False. it has been calculated above for A part

F) True. the direction of EF due to both the charges will be in west direction.hence they will add up and pprovide a net EF in the west direction
