Question

Three sleds are being pulled horizontally on frictionless horizontal ice using horizontal ropes (the figure 3 sleds that are 10kg, 20kg and 30kg ). The pull is horizontal and of magnitude 142.

Find the tension in rope A.

Explanation / Answer

The net horizontal forces are all that matter here. Write an equation for each sled individually. For the first sled: ?F1 = m1a = P - T1 T1 = P - m1a------>(1) The second sled: ?F2 = m2a = T1 - T2------>(2) The third sled: ?F3 = m3a = T3 T3 = m3a-------->(3) Now substitute (1) and (3) into (2) and solve for acceleration: m2a = P - m1a - m3a a = P / (m1 + m2 + m3) = 142N/(10Kg+20Kg+30Kg) = 2.36 m/s² Then T1is found from (1) above: Tension in rope A, T1 = P - m1a = 142N - (10kg)(2.36m/s²) =118.33 N
