Question

The Saturn V, developed at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) under the direction of Wernher Von Braun, was the largest in a family of liquid-propellant rockets that solved the problem of getting to the moon. A total of thirty-two (32) Saturns of all types were launched, not one failed. The three stage Saturn V was taller than a 36 story building and was the largest, most powerful rocket ever launched. Fully loaded with the Apollo spacecraft onboard, it had a mass of 6.8 million pounds. This was still no match; however, for the five powerful rockets that controlled the first stage with 33,560,000 newtons of thrust upwards. Using this information find the net acceleration (m/s2) of the Saturn V rocket. Assume that there is no change in mass, the rocket stays completely perpendicular, and there is no drag on the rocket.

Explanation / Answer

Ignore all of the mumbo jumbo and get the information that is needed to solve the problem. The force F= 33,560,000 N We are given our mass in pounds of 6.8 million. Divide 68000000 by 2.2 in order to convert to kilograms which is needed to correctly solve the equation. 6800000 lbs = 3090909.1 kg F=ma plug in our knowns and the answer is F/m=a so 33,560,000 N/ 3090909.1 kg= 10.857647026889273 m/s^2
