Question
Can anyone help me out with this physics problem?? It's my last problem and i can't get it!
A bedroom bureau with a mass of 59 kg, including drawers and clothing, rests on the horizontal floor. The coefficients of friction between the bureau and the floor are 0.45 for static and 0.35 for kinetic. You pull on the bureau with a force 694 N at 34° above the horizontal. The bureau initially moves along the floor in the same general direction as you pull.
(a) What is the maximum static friction force on the bureau (before it begins to move)?
(b) What is the acceleration of the bureau once it is in motion?
Explanation / Answer
Given Mass of the bureau , m = 59 kg coefficient of static friction, s = 0.45 coefficient of kinetic friction, k = 0.35 Pulling force is F = 694 N at 340 a) The maximum static friction force is fs,max = s N where N = mg - F sin34 = 59kg *9.8 m/s^2 - 694N(0.559) N = 190.25 N fs,max = 0.45 *190.25N = 85.6 N b) Acceleration of the bureau is ma = F cos34 -k N ma = 694N(0.829) - 0.35 *190.25N a = 8.6 m/s^2 b) Acceleration of the bureau is ma = F cos34 -k N ma = 694N(0.829) - 0.35 *190.25N a = 8.6 m/s^2Related Questions
