Handout: 12 February 2018 Due: 26 February 2018 BIOL 4504 Spring 2018 NAME: Tissue-Water Relations in Potato: Worksheet 1. 1 pt. The water potential of a soil is -0.27 MPa. The water potential of the roots of a plant growing in the soil is -0.32 MPa. Will water move into or out of the roots under these conditions? 2. 2 pts. Farmer Brown plans on adding fertilizer to his crop. However, he's a little nervous because the last time he used fertilizer many of the plants wilted and some even turned brown and died. Why did this "fertilizer burn" occur in terms of water potential, and what could Farmer Brown do to enable him to add the same amount of fertilizer while being more likely to avoid this problem? 2 pts. In today's lab the goal is to determine the water potential of potato tissue by a few different means. Are the value(s) we determine experimentally today likely be the same as would actually be found in a healthy, growing, living potato? Why or why not? 3.Explanation / Answer
1 pt. Answer : As diffusion of water takes place from higher water potential i.e. -0.27 MPa to lower water potential that is --0.32 MPa, so water move into the roots from soil.
2 pts .Answer : When excess fertilizer is added it ll form a hypertonic solution whose water potential is low than the cell so accordingly water will come out from the cells, resulting wilting and browning of the plant.
