Question

A nearsighted sheriff fires at a cattle rustler with his trusty six-shooter. Fortunately for the rustler, the bullet misses him and penetrates the town water tank, causing a leak (see figure).

(a) If the top of the tank is open to the atmosphere, determine the speed at which the water leaves the hole when the water level is 0.510 m above the hole.
[My answer for question (a) is correct:]
3.16 m/s

(b) Where does the stream hit the ground if the hole is 3.25 m above the ground?

I need to be understanding this problem (b), can you please provide step-by-step explanation along with correct final answer? Thanks!

Explanation / Answer

The water coming out of hole will take a parabolioc path.

so we need to use equations of motion to find distance.

a) h = 0.5gt^2 ( when the water leaves the hole, it has only horizontal velocity but no vertical velocity)

3.25 = 0.5 (9.8)t^2

t = 0.814 seconds ( the water will take 0.814 seconds apprx, to reach the ground)

s ( horizontal distance) = ut ( where u =initial velocity and t -tiume)

S= 3.16 ( 0.814)=2.573 m approx

Therefore the water will hit the ground at a distance of 2.573 m
