Everything is initially at rest, but someone is careless and lets go of the pulley and the bucket then begins to move downward. What is the speed of the bucket when it has fallen a distance of 1.5 m?

A bucket filled with dirt of mass 18 kg is suspended by a rope that hangs over a pulley of mass 31 kg and radius 0.30 m (figure below). Everything is initially at rest, but someone is careless and lets go of the pulley and the bucket then begins to move downward. What is the speed of the bucket when it has fallen a distance of 1.5 m?

Explanation / Answer

We know that,
Acceleration due to gravity in earth= 9.8m/s^2

So,
the speed of the bucket is
9.8 + 9.8/2
=9.8 + 4.9
= 14.7 m/s
