Explanation / Answer

.e) all of the above. Glucose and fructose are monosaccharides which follows a general formula CnH2nOn. Since they cannot be hydrolyzed further into simpler forms thus they are simple sugars. Structurally monosaccharide consists of a single polyhydroxy aldehyde or ketone. Both glucose and fructose are six-carbon monosaccharides indicating hexose characteristics. But glucose contains aldehyde as a functional group(aldohexose) while fructose has ketone group as a functional group(Ketohexose) hence, they are structurally different.

.d) glucose and ribose are monosaccharides. Glucose is a six-carbon monosaccharide as opposed to ribose, a five-carbon monosaccharide. As a result, glucose and ribose do not have the same number of carbons. The structural formula of glucose is C6H12O6 while structural formula of ribose is C5H10O5, therefore, the structural formula of glucose and ribose is not the same. Now since sucrose is a disaccharide consisting of glucose and fructose, ribose cannot be a component of sucrose. Even though both glucose and ribose have aldehyde as their functional group but they are not arranged in the same way as the third carbon of glucose have hydrogen on their right side whereas in ribose it is the hydroxyl group which occupies this position.

.c) Sucrose is composed of a molecule of fructose and a molecule of glucose.

.c) a combination of glucose and galactose forms a lactose which is a disaccharide
