Question
The algae that you used for this experiment are grown in the lab in large containers under grow lights. Students at the beginning of the week and at the end of the week were comparing their data. The students at the beginning of the week found that their stock solutions had a smaller absorbance than those at the end of the week. What has happened? 7. Use the graph below to answer the questions 8 and 9 0.151 0.10 ÷ C.vulgaris 2714 -M. aeruginosa 2061 - M. aeruginosa 2383 0.05 0.00 1.0x107 2.0107 Cells/mL (Taken from Held, 2011) Explain the basic trends you see from this graph. Why don't all three species of algae have the same absorbance at the same concentration? 8. A researcher measured the absorbance of a sample of C. vulgaris and found it to be 0.05. What is the concentration of the algae in that sample? 9.Explanation / Answer
7. Here algae are grown on the large containers. Stock solutions means the solution containing algae present in the main stock. Now, we can use the absorbance value to calculate the number of algae present in the sample. This is an indirect reliable method to count algae density. As it is expected that if algae will growing , then we will have more algae at the stock container at the end of the week when compared to beggining of the week. Thus if we check the absorbance of the stock soluiton at the beginning of the week, the absorbance will be lower. While when we check the absorbance again at end of the week, there will be more algae, so the absorbance will be higher.
