Question
We are making a graph which reades - induced EMF in the coil vs. timeA magnet of length L is dropped so the front end is at height H from the coil, and you get a graph with two peaks. Each qeustion changes the procedure, and we wish to compare the new graph to this one.
a)First.a second identical magnet is placed so the north pole of the first is next to the south pole of the other. If the pair of magnets is dropped from height H, how will the graph compare to the original graph?
peak 1 will be slightly less than before, peak 2 will be the same as before
peak 1 will be slightly less than before, peak 2 will be more than before
peak 1 will be nearly zero, peak 2 will be moe than before
both peaks will be nearly zero
both peaks will be slightly less than before
peak 1 will be slightly less than before, peak 2 will be zero
peak 1 will be nearly zero, peak 2 will be slightly less than before
peak 1 will be the same as before, peak 2 will be moe than before
both peaks will be more than before
both peaks will be the same as before
peak 1 will be the same as before, peak 2 will be the same as before
peak 1 will be nearly zero, peak 2 will be the same as before
peak 1 will be the same as before, peak 2 will be slightly less than before
b) Next, the two identical magnets are placed so the north poles face in the same direction. If the pair of magnets is dropped from height H, how will the graph compare to the original graph?
peak 1 will be the same as before, peak 2 will be the same as before
peak 1 will be nearly zero, peak 2 will be slightly less than before
peak 1 will be nearly zero, peak 2 will be moe than before
peak 1 will be slightly less than before, peak 2 will be moe than before
peak 1 will be the same as before, peak 2 will be moe than before
both peaks will be nearly zero
peak 1 will be the same as before, peak 2 will be slightly less than before
both peaks will be the same as before
peak 1 will be slightly less than before, peak 2 will be zero
both peaks will be more than before
both peaks will be slightly less than before
peak 1 will be nearly zero, peak 2 will be the same as before
peak 1 will be slightly less than before, peak 2 will be the same as before
c) Now, the same magnet is held fixed and the coil is dropped from height H, Assume the coil falls so the magnet passes through the center. How will the graph compare to the original graph?
peak 1 will be nearly zero, peak 2 will be moe than before
peak 1 will be nearly zero, peak 2 will be slightly less than before
peak 1 will be slightly less than before, peak 2 will be the same as before
both peaks will be slightly less than before
both peaks will be nearly zero
peak 1 will be the same as before, peak 2 will be moe than before
both peaks will be more than before
peak 1 will be slightly less than before, peak 2 will be zero
both peaks will be the same as before
peak 1 will be the same as before, peak 2 will be the same as before
peak 1 will be slightly less than before, peak 2 will be moe than before
peak 1 will be nearly zero, peak 2 will be the same as before
peak 1 will be the same as before, peak 2 will be slightly less than before
d) Next: the original experiment is repeated on the Moon, where g, the acceleration due to gravity, is about one-sixth of g on Earth. If the magnet is dropped from height H, how will the graph compare to the original graph?
peak 1 will be nearly zero, peak 2 will be the same as before
peak 1 will be nearly zero, peak 2 will be moe than before
peak 1 will be slightly less than before, peak 2 will be the same as before
both peaks will be the same as before
both peaks will be slightly less than before
peak 1 will be slightly less than before, peak 2 will be zero
peak 1 will be the same as before, peak 2 will be slightly less than before
peak 1 will be the same as before, peak 2 will be the same as before
peak 1 will be nearly zero, peak 2 will be slightly less than before
peak 1 will be the same as before, peak 2 will be moe than before
peak 1 will be slightly less than before, peak 2 will be moe than before
both peaks will be nearly zero
both peaks will be more than before
e) Finally: if you increase the height H, what will happen to the graph?
both peaks will be more than before
both peaks will be nearly zero
peak 1 will be nearly zero, peak 2 will be moe than before
peak 1 will be slightly less than before, peak 2 will be the same as before
peak 1 will be nearly zero, peak 2 will be the same as before
peak 1 will be the same as before, peak 2 will be the same as before
both peaks will be slightly less than before
peak 1 will be slightly less than before, peak 2 will be zero
peak 1 will be the same as before, peak 2 will be slightly less than before
peak 1 will be slightly less than before, peak 2 will be moe than before
peak 1 will be nearly zero, peak 2 will be slightly less than before
both peaks will be the same as before
peak 1 will be the same as before, peak 2 will be moe than before
Explanation / Answer
both peaks will be more than before
The speed at which magnet falls through the coil depends upon the height, as per vf2 = vi2 + 2 * g * H i.e. grater is H greater is speed and hence greater is change in flux, which results in higher peaks.
