Question
A silicon monoxide (n=1.45) film of 100 nm thickness is used to coat a glass camera lens (n=1.56). What wavelength of light in the visible region (390 to 710 nm) will be most efficiently transmitted by this system?
I thought most efficiently transmitted by this system would mean constructive interference. I got two phase changes for this problem so I am not sure, but when I do this problem for destructive interference for 2 phase changes I get the right answer (2nt=m+.5). Anyways what does most efficently transmitted by this system mean?
Explanation / Answer
Interference happens when light is reflected(not transmitted) by the two sides of the film. So those lights get destructive interference should be most efficiently transmitted. And you are right about the two phase changes for this problem. You should get right answer using destructive interference for no relative phase shift (2nt = m+.5?). Hope it's clear.
