Question
A 52 kg skier is at the top of a slope, as in the figure. At the initial point A, the skier is 10.8 m vertically above the final point B. The acceleration of gravity is 9.81 m/s 2. Find the difference in gravitational potential energy associated with the skier at the points A and B if the zero level for gravitational potential energy is at point B. Answer in units of J. Find the difference in potential energy if the zero level is at point A. Answer in units of J. Find the difference in potential energy if the zero level is midway down the slope, at a height of 5.40 m. Answer in units of J.Explanation / Answer
Given:
m=52kg
h=10.8m
a) Change in Gravitational potential energy
U=mgh=52(9.8)(10.8-0)= 5503.68J
b) zero level is at point A->find change in U
U=mgh=52(9.8)[0-(-10.8)]= 5503.68J
c)zero level is at midway, 5.40m->find change in U
U=mgh=52(9.8)[5.4-(-5.4)]= 5503.68J
