Question

Chp. 18: Heal & Temperature What is the final temperature if a 20-gram ice cube at T = - 15 degree C is dropped into a Styrofoam coffee cup containing 200 g of coffee at 75 degree C? (Assume no heat is exchanged with the environment, the heat capacity of the Styrofoam cup is negligible, and that the coffee is essentially pure water.) A volumetric flask is made of Pyrex glass. At 20 degree C. its capacity is 500.00 mL. What is its capacity if it is filled to the reference mark at 100 degree C?

Explanation / Answer

1) 20*15*0.5 + 20*80 < 200*75

so the temperature will be >0 let it be T

20*15*0.5 + 20*80 +20*1*(T) = 200*1*(75-T)

220T = 13250

T=60.227 degrees celsius

2)V = Vo(1+3T) = 500(1 + 3*32.5 x 10-7*80) = 500.39 ml
