Question

Q) Using the same triangle, find the vector components of the electric force on q1 and the vector's magnitude and direction. (Use the charges given in the Practice It section.)

Fx = Your answer is correct. N
Fy = Your answer is incorrect. N
magnitude= Your answer is incorrect.
direction Your answer is incorrect.° counter-clockwise from the +x-axis

Practice it section it is referring to: "Use the worked example above to help you solve this problem. Consider three point charges at the corners of a triangle, as shown in the figure, where q1 = 5.95 10-9 C, q2 = -2.42 10-9 C, and q3 = 4.98 10-8 C."

Explanation / Answer

F21 is all directed in the positive y-direction.

F21 = k(q1q2/9 m2) = 1.44 * 10-8 N

F31 is directed down into the third quadrant; its x component is negative and is equal to Fcos 37°; its y component is also negative and is equal to Fsin 37°;

F31 = k(q1q2/25 m2) = 1.07 * 10-7 N; so:

F31x = -8.51 * 10-8 N;    F31y = -6.41 * 10-8 N

Combining x and y components: F1x = -8.51 * 10-8 N; F1y = -4.97 * 10-8 N

magnitude is square root of sum of squares is 9.854 * 10-8 N; direction is arctangent y/x = 210.3 °
