Explanation / Answer

A proton of mass moving with a speed of 2.8×106 undergoes a head-on elastic collision with an alpha particle of mass which is initially at rest.
A)What is the speed of the proton after the collision?
B)What is the speed of the alpha particle after the collision?

i am unable to see the velocity of proton, i guess it is 2.8 * 106 m/s, so doing with that value. if it is incorrect. please just interchange in the below solution.

V1 = ( m1 - m2) / ( m1 + m2 ) U1 + 2m2 U2 / (m1 + m2)

V2 = ( m2 - m1) / ( m1 + m2 ) U2 + 2m1 U1 / (m1 + m2)

where U1 , U2 are the initial velocites of proton and alpha particle

         V1 , V2 are the final velocites of proton and alpha particle

A) speed of proton V1 = ( m-4m)/5m * 2.8 * 106 = - 1.68 * 106 m/s ( so it rebounds)

B) speed of alpha particle V2 = 0 + 2m/5m * 2.8 * 106 = 1.12 * 106 m/s
