Question

I have a man running up a flight of stairs. The man's weight is 96.36kg. Height of stairs is 2.5m. It took 8s to run up the stairs. I have:

P=W/T = mgy/t = (96.36)9.8)(2.5) / 8 = 2360.82j / 8 = 295.1 watts or .295 kw

If the power company supplies 1kw of power for 1 hour for 8 cents how much would the man make if he climbed continuously for an hour.

This is where I get confused. Do I take the 2360.82j and divide by 3600 seconds or take the wattage times 3600 seconds divided by the original 8 seconds?

Explanation / Answer

You would keep the value you have of 0.295 kW, and then multiply it by 3600 seconds (because your value was joules per second, so now you will have joules per hour, or kWh). This gives you a value of 1062.36 kilowatt-hours. This times 0.08 dollars equals $84.99 ^^This is all assuming your original calculation of power the man is generating is correct
