Activity: Observation of a living root system In the lab room there are examples of freshly germinated ba live plant growing hydroponically-that is with its roots in a nutrient solution rather than in soil Examine the root system of one of these specimens, Since its function is absorption, what about its growth pattern, size and shape allow it to do a good job of that? What is different about this whole living intact root system compared to what you see when you pull a plant up from the g this an example of a tap root or a fibrous root system? round? Is

Explanation / Answer

The culture of the plant growing on a nutrient medium rather than on soil is known as hydroponics. It requires a high degree of controlled efficiency and shows a strikingly different physiological change. The density of the roots is considered to be high when it comes to such culture system. There are many factors on which the function of the root is dependent. The growth of the roots in ongoing and tends to increase with time and it tends to continue absorbing nutrients.

The root oxygenation is a vital component and the health of the root is maintained by superior oxygenation. Proper respiration of the roots is needed to prevent them from suffocation. The roots at times even develop oxytropism where they avoid growing in areas that is deprived of oxygen content. The size of the roots tends to increase a lot with time.

There are some significant differences that are observed where salinity and phytotoxicity is one of them. In soil, the roots have to fight with all of these but not in case of the roots that are grown in nutrient medium. The level of toxicity is also less.

It shows a tap root system which grows vertically downwards and has multiple branches. This type of root system develops during the process of germination and helps the plants or newly germinated seed to gain essential nutrients and other factors from the nutrient solution.
