Question

Two forces are acting tangentially on the rim of a merry-go-round. Imagine two friends "turning" manually the merry-go-round. See picture. F1 is 400 N and F2 is 250 N, the diameter of the carousel is 8.00m, and its mass is 500 kg.

Two forces are acting tangentially on the rim of a merry-go-round. Imagine two friends "turning" manually the merry-go-round. See picture. F1 is 400 N and F2 is 250 N, the diameter of the carousel is 8.00m, and its mass is 500 kg. Determine the net torque acting on the carousel if there is a 200mN frictional torque slowing down the rotation. F. 800 mN Clockwise 200 mN Counterclockwise O400 mN Clockwise O 1000 mN Counterclockwise

Explanation / Answer

torque actiong due to F1=400*8/2=1600 Nm (clockwiise)

torque acting due to F2=250*8/2=1000 Nm(counterclockwise)

frictional torque=200 Nm

Net torque = 1600-1000-200=400 Nm (clockwise)

total moment of inertia=moment of inertia of merry go round+moment of inertia of two children sitting on the merry go round

= 0.5*500*42 + 50*42+50*42 = 5600 kg-m2
