Question
1a: An electromagnetic wave travels in the direction. At a particular point (Q) in space E 500 N/C. The maximum magnitude of E is also 500 N/C. Determine the magnitude and direction of B at point Q b: The frequency of the wave is 1010 Hz. What is the shortest distance from Q for which El = 0 at that same instant? 100 c: A proton has 3 x 10'y m/s. At a particular instant, it is at a location in space where E and B are both at their maximum values. Determine the magnitude and direction of the net force on the proton on that instant. Note that there will be forces due to E and B.Explanation / Answer
1 a) Given that Emax = 500 N/C
and Bmax = Emax/c = 500/(3*10^8) = 1.67*10^-6 T
direction is along +z axis
b) f = 10^10 Hz
lamda = c/f = (3*10^8)/10^10 = 3*10^-2 m
required shortest distance is lamda/4 = (3*10^-2)/4 = 0.75*10^-2 m
c) Electric force is Fe = q*E = 1.6*10^-19*500 = 8*10^-17 N alobng x-axis
Magnetic force is Fb = q*v*B = 1.6*10^-19*3*10^7*1.67*10^-6 = 8.016*10^-18 N along x-axis
Net force on proton is F = Fe+Fb = (8*10^-17)+(0.8016*10^-17) = 8.8016*10^-17 N along x-axis
