Question

Several forces are acting simultaneously on a ball rolling along the ground to the right. The force of gravity on the bal Is 20 N, whlle there is a frictional force of 8 N, and a force due to alr reslstance of 1 N. Recall that magnitude is the quantity or amount of a vector without the direction (a) Are there other forces are present? If yes what type of force? Normal Force (Fn) Tension Force (Ft) Applied Force (F No Force (b) What is the magnitude(amount) of the net force in the x direction? (c) What Is the direction of the net force in the x direction? right left down No force up (d) What is the magnitude of the net force in the y direction? (r) What is the direction of the net force in the x direction?? left down up ¡i) no force right

Explanation / Answer

(a) As the ball is rolling towards right there must be an applied force which act opposite to the frictional and air resistance forces towards right. So option (c).

(b) Magnitude of net force in x-direction is = (8+1) N

= 9 N

(c) Net force in x-direction will act along the direction of motion of the ball. So option is towards right.

(d) As there is no motion in vertical direction, so, magnitude of net force in x-direction = 0

(f) I think this should be y-direction because x-direction is already asked in (c). Here the option should be no force.
