Evaluate Feedback Print Orm Course Contents » O Timer Notes - A beam of protons is moving in the +x direction with a speed of 18.7 km/s through a region in which the electric field is perpendicular to the magnetic field. The beam is not deflected in this region. If the magnetic fied has a magnitude of 0.914 T and points in the +z direction, what is the magnitude of the electric field? Submit Answer Tries 0/5 What is the direction of the electric field? ty -y -z -X Submit Answer Tries 0/5 Would electrons that have the same velocity as the protons be deflected by these fields? If so, in what direction would they be deflected? Explanation / Answer
here,
the speed of proton , v = 18700 m/s i
the magnetic feild , B = 0.914 T k
let the electric feild be E
equaitng the forces
q * v * B = q * E
18700 * 0.914 = E
E = 1.7 * 10^4 N/C
the direction of magnetic force is in -y direction
so the elctric force is in +y direction
and the elctric feild must be in +y direction
when electron beam is present
the magnetic force is in +y direction
so the elctric force is in -y direction
as the electron is negatively charged
the elctric feild must be in +y direction
