Question
A Michaelson interferometer uses a 550 nm laser. For this experiment there is NO movement of either mirror. A small glass chamber containing a vacuum is placed in one arm; the chamber measures 5 cm along the beam. As the experiment begins, there is a bright spot on the screen. The chamber is then slowly filled with carbon dioxide (CO2) gas, until the pressure is the same as the pressure in the room. During this process, an observer counts 82 bright-dark fringe shifts on the screen. Find the index of refraction of CO2.
Explanation / Answer
path Difference (u-1) L = N WaveLength
here N = 82
wave length = 550 nm
length L = 5 cm
so
(u-1) * 0.05 = 82 * 550*10^-9
u = 1.001 is the index of refraction of CO2.
