1:15 AM loncapa1.fsu.edu Tipier Physics 5/e AT&T; Part A Problem 29-75a: A coil is connected to a 60-Hz, 100-V ac generator. At this frequency the coil has an impedance of 7.3 ? and a reactance of 5.2 ?, what is the current in the coil? Submit Answer Tries 0/15 Part B Problem 29-75b What is the phase angle between the current and the applied voltage? (Calculate the angle in degrees, but do not provide units.) Submit Answer Tries 0/15 Part C Problem 29-75c: What series capacitance is required so that the current and voltage are in phase? Submit Answer Tries 0/15 Part D Problem 29-75d What then is the voltage measured across the capacitor? Submit AnswerTries 0/15

Explanation / Answer

a) I = V / Z = 100 / 7.3

current = 13.7 A

b) phi = sin-1(X / Z) =sin-1(5.2 / 7.3)

phase angle = 45.42 deg

c) At resonace XL= XC

C = 1 / 2 pi * 60 * 5.2

capacitance = 5.1 * 10-4 F

d) R = Z * cos phi = 7.3 * cos 45.42 = 5.12 ohms

I = V / R = 100 / 5.12 = 19.52 A

V = I * Xc = 19.52 * 5.2 = 101.5 V
