Explanation / Answer

1. E. vacuole

The central vacuole found in plants and it is large in size occupies 90 percent of the plant cell. It has two parts, the cell sap, and the tonoplast. In plants, it maintains turgor pressure, storage of water and minerals and it pushes all the contents of cytoplasm towards the cell periphery thereby increases the rate of photosynthesis. The central vacuole also found in animals involved in the storage of inorganic and organic molecules including enzymes.

2. A. transfers energy in food to a usable form

Mitochondria: it is also called powerhouse of the cell and it is a double membrane-bound organelle found in plants and animals. It produces huge quantities of energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The reducing equivalents (NADH2 and FADH2) generated in glycolysis, the formation of acetyl coenzyme A, Kreb’s cycle are used to production of energy in mitochondria.

3. C. cells>tissues>organs>organ system>organism

4. D. chloroplasts

Chloroplasts are organelles that carry photosynthesis. They have chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b, which captures the energy of sunlight and converts it chemical energy which is stored in the form ATP. The ATP is utilized to production of carbohydrates

5. B. cell wall

A cell wall is outer most layer of the cell. All animal cells do not possess the cell wall but the plants & bacteria have the cell wall. In plants, it is chemically made up cellulose hemicellulose and pectin but in bacteria, it is composed by the peptidoglycan which is made up two repeating units called N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG) and N-acetyl muramic acid (NAM).

6. A. helps to prevent water loss

In plants, the roots, leaves, stem has a single layer of cells at the surface which is called epidermis. The epidermis involved in the absorption water, prevent water loss and control the gas exchange.

7. C. bendable because the calcium salts were removed

Both phosphate & Calcium minerals make the bone rigid and strong. Acids like vinegar remove the calcium from the bone and make it to bend and less rigid.

8. C. Chromatin or chromosome.

In interphase of the cell cycle, the DNA is arranged in the form of long thread-like structures in the nucleus of the cell called chromatin (chromosomes). Each chromosome made up of DNA and proteins.

9. D. plasma membrane

Plasma membrane forms the outer barrier of the cell and it is also called cell membrane or cytoplasmic membrane and it separate cell from the outside environment. Made up of the lipid bilayer, which is selectively permeable.

10. C. Mitochondria
