Question

3. (25 points) The circuit at the right shows a power supply of voltage ??. 20V connected to resistors R,-2.0kQ, R,-5.0k2, R-1.0k, and R 4.0k2 The points A and B are for the reference. Please in BOX in your final answers! Ri Rs R2 R4 a.(5 pts) What is the value of the equivalent resistance in this circuit? b. (5 pts) What is the value of the current flowing out of the power supply? c. (5 pt) How much energy is supplied to the circuit by the power supply in 2 minutes? d. (5 pts) What is the value and direction of the current flowing through resistor R3? (5 pts) What would a voltmeter read (ie. what's the voltage?) if its red lead were connected to point B and its black lead were connected to point A, VVA? Show your work. e.

Explanation / Answer

1. For equivalent resistance in circuit

We add the resistors who are in series

Req1 = R1+R2 = 7kohm

Req2= R3+R4 = 5kohm

Now for equivalence resistance

We add resistance parallel

1/Req= 1/Req1+1/Req2  = 2.92ohm

2. Ohms law

V= IR So, I= V/R= 20/2.92= 6.84A

3. Energy supplied in 2 minutes

E supplied = P×t = 202×2×60/2.92A = 16,438W
