Question

In the figure, a metal rod is forced to move with constant velocity v along two parallel metal rails, connected with a strip of metal at one end. A magnetic field of magnitude B 0.350 T points out of the page. a) If the rails are separated by L 25 cm and the speed of the rod is 55 , what emf is 3. generated? (2 points) b) If the rod has a resistance of 18 32 and the rails and connector have negligible resistance, what is the current in the rod? (2 points) c) At what rate is energy being transferred to thermal energy? (2 points)

Explanation / Answer

here,

magnetic feild , B = 0.35 T

a)

L = 25 cm = 0.25 m

the speed of rod , v = 55 cm/s = 0.55 m/s

emf generated , V = B * v * L

V = 0.35 * 0.55 * 0.25 V

V = 0.048 V

b)

resistance , R = 18 ohm

the current in the rod , I = V/R

I = 0.048 /18 = 2.67 * 10^-3 A

c)

the rate at which the energy being transferred , P = I^2 * R

P = (2.67 * 10^-3)^2 * 18 W

P = 1.28 * 10^-4 W
