Question

(A) Find the equivalent resistance and current through the 3-? resistor for the circuit shown below. Answer: equivalent resistance: , (5%); Current in3-52: (5%) 3? 24? 12? 72V (B) A charged particle (charge q and mass m) goes undeflected when passing through perpendicular electric field E (7.5x10 V/m) and magnetic field B (0.25 T). When the electric field is turned off, the charged particle moves in a circle with a radius of 5.0 mm. What is the m/q ratio of this particle? 10% Answer Show the complete work in order to earn a full credit

Explanation / Answer

(A)

3 ohm and 5 ohm resistor are in series.

equivalent resistance, R = 3 + 5

R = 8 ohm

this is in parallel with 24 ohm,

1 / R' = 1 / 8 + 1/ 24

R' = 6 ohm

This is in series with 12 ohm resistor,

Equivalent resistance of circuit,

Req = 6 + 12

Req = 18 ohm

Total current in circuit,

lt = V / Req = 72 / 18

lt = 4 A

Total current will divide in opposite ratio of resistance b/w 24 ohm and 8 ohm (5 + 3) branch.

current through 3 ohm resistor,

l = 24*4 / (24 + 8)

l = 3 A
