Question

Item 7 - Part A Constants I Periodic Table Certain critical bolts on a bicycle (like the ones that attach the handlebars) must not be over (or under) tightened. You might see a max torque' value etched in the metal next to the bolt. I wish to apply the maximum recommended torque of 18.0 N·m to the bolts holding the handle bars in place. To achieve this torque, with what force must I pull on the end of a 27.0 cm -long wrench if I pull (a) at right angles to the wrench shaft and (b) at 111 to the wrench shaft? Explanation / Answer

Given,

tau = 18 N-m ; L = 27 cm = 0.27 m

a)theta = 90 deg

We know from the defination of torque

Tau = R F sin(theta)

18 = 0.27 x F x sin90 => F = 18/0.27 = 66.67 N

Hence, F = 66.67 N

b)Theta = 111 deg

F = Tau/ R sin(theta)

F = 18/0.27 x sin111 = 71.41 N

Hence, F = 71.41 N
