The between the axes of the first and second polarizers is 17.9 and the angle between the axes of the second and third polarizers is 55.7. What is the ratio of the intensity of light emerging from the third polarizer. l to the intensity of light incident on the first polarizer, b? Number 7.9 5.7 Pre ious ? Explanation / Answer

When light passes through first polarizer, it's intensity will be reduced to half

I1 = I0/2

After that when light passes thorugh 2nd polarizer, Intensity will be

I2 = I1*(cos A1)^2

After that when light passes thorugh 3rd polarizer, Intensity will be

I3 = I2*(cos A2)^2

I3 = I1*(cos A1)^2*(cos A2)^2

I3 = (I0/2)*(cos A1)^2*(cos A2)^2

I3/I0 = (1/2)*(cos A1)^2*(cos A2)^2

Now using given values:

A1 = 17.9 deg

A2 = 55.7 deg

I3/I0 = (1/2)*(cos 17.9 deg)^2*(cos 55.7 deg)^2

I3/I0 = 0.144

Angle A2 is already given with respect to second polarizer.
