Question

The cell membrane controls the movement of chemicals into and out of the cell. Some genetic diseases, such as cystic fibrosis , are caused by the problems with the transport of chemicals through the membrane. Imagine that you are a scientist who is writing a grant proposal to study membranes. In your proposal, you must justify the importance of human cell membrane research. On what basis would you explain to the committee the importance of membrane research? The cell membrane controls the movement of chemicals into and out of the cell. Explanation / Answer

Cell membrane is a biological membrane made up of lipid bilayer with protein embedded in it. It helps cell to transport molecules, ions and other organic components transport across cell. Hence it is a selective permeable. The membrane is also helps in adhesion, cell signaling ad conductivity. Special receptors and protein present on the surface will help to destroy pathogens. Cell membrane has important function to maintain regular mechanism of transportation. If it fails. It will create life threatening disorders like cyctic fibrosis. Cyctic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator are proteins present on the surface of cell membrane which is coded by CFTR gene. This protein serves as a channel for production of saliva, mucus, tears and digestive enzyme through transporting chloride ion across membrane. Mutation in this CFTR gene will not code for this protein and whole mechanism will disturbed.

Individuals may suffer from serious respiratory, lung and digestive problems. Hence cell membrane has important function in regulating ion exchange, water content and other organic content inside the cell. Research must be needed to elaborate the study of cell membrane.
