Explanation / Answer

Immediately after switch is opened, current through inductor does not change, ( as it does not change suddenly). Current through inductor long time after switch is closed or just before switch is opened is
I1 - I2 = 0.974 - 0.584 = 0.39 (values taken from part b)

This current runs through inductor after switch is opened, but completes loop, going through R2, in upward direction as current through inductor is in downward drection.
So I2 immediately switched is opened is -0.39 A ( i2 is shown downward)
